Mercure Bucharest City Center 4* – hotel review

Hotel Mercure Bucharest City Center is a 4* object, built in 2014. There are 114 rooms of different standards located on 6 floors. Even at first sight the hotel seems to be a pretty good place to spend couple days in Bucharest, cause its appearance is attractive and also the location is not bad either. The main theme of the hotel is music, presumably due to its situation – at the street of George Enescu, famous romanian musician.

I went to Bucharest for the so-called „ city break”, which basically is a fast, weekend city sightseeing. I didn’t want to waste time for waiting for a local bus (in rush hours), so I decided to book a transport( from and to the airport) offered by a hotel. The offer looks as follows: Business Sedan (Mercedes E-Class or C-Class) – 39,3 EUR one way (max. 3 people), Economy sedan (Skoda) – 25 EUR one way (max. 3 people), Shuttle bus – 45 EUR one way (from 3 up to 7 people). With three people travelling the offer seems to be reasonably positive. The driver was waiting with a personalised sheet (name and surname) in arrivals – very convenient solution. I had a chance to test it out before, for instance in a Hyatt Regency Thessaloniki hotel. On my way back, from the hotel to the airport I was a little worried we’ll be late, cause there were diversions due to the street marathon that took place around, but eventually everything end up happily.

Coming back to the hotel itself – checking-in was fast, efficient and in a nice mood – i received a voucher for a free drink (due to my platinum status of Le Club AccorHotels) and there was also a gift waiting for me in the room – local, traditional, fancy spoon provided together with a welcome handwritten letter. By the way i had a huge pleasure to chat with a designer of “my” room – MyRoom Privilege.

Room

As i mentioned before I stayed in a „MyRoom” room (local, traditional room in Romanian style), which, as the service assured, normally was sold as a “Privilege”.

In the room, as you can see in the picture above there was a regular desk with a a lamp, old decorative chest and „Illy Coffee” coffee maker which I really enjoyed because of its design. Besides, as can be seen below, traditional, Romanian cups and other than that the standard ones – paper cups. Even the electric kettle was supplied.

Moreover there were a lot of local ornaments in a room, that normally you cannot see in a hotel. However different rules apply to „My Room” and that’s why I like it so much.

In the room, as you probably can guess, there was a big bed which had a beautifully painted wall over. Beside that i had to mention that air-conditioning worked quietly and smoothly.

Bathroom

Bathroom had a quite regular dimentions, and inside there was a shower stall, efficient hairdryer (that i didn’t need to use) and also a set of towels and cosmetics.. As always in a Privilege Room, there were also toothbrushes so i didn’t have to go downstairs to the reception desk to ask for them. Boldy I can admit that it was generally clean here as well.

Breakfast

Hotel breakfast is a thing tiggers like the best and as I am usually the first person in every hotel on breakfast everything is lovely arranged. When it comes to the choise it’s also very good. Starting with a hot food, continuing with the cold snacks and ending with a honey in an orginal patch.

Winestone Restaurant

Winestone Restauraint in Mercure Bucharest City Center is not a typical Winestonem, that we know for example from other polish hotels. It’s decorated in a totally different vibe. Also different tones (than the standard ones) are prevailing and the main theme, just like in other hotel’s places is a music.

When it comes to the cuisine I ordered some regional dishes for myself:

Free appetizer

Sour soup with pork meatballs 14 LEI

Winestone traditional platter (320 gr) – 25 LEI

Coffee

Generally i can assert that food was very good, but when it comes to the main course I wouldn’t recommend it to people who doesn’t like fat dishes – this didn’t belong to the leanest ones. Anyway the soup was top-notch.

During the second day of my stay there was some party here and I couldn’t get into the restaurant, but the hotel crew organized some additional seating in lobby, where I could rest and feed. Everything from the regular menu was availible. Of course there was also a room service option but I personally don’t practice it and prefer to spend some time among people.

SPA&Wellness zone

There is a mini fitness zone in a hotel, but unfortunately i didn’t have an occasion to check it.

Location

Hotel is located within a short distance from the exact old town – you can easily get there by foot with a 15-minute walk or take advantage of the closest metro or bus. I crossed this route several times both walking and by metro – either option is nice. Particularly i would recomment a walk down the Calea Victoriei street, which has a variety of antique buildings as well as interesting eateries. Specifically impresses the building of Romanian Ateneum, or even a horse monument of Karol I and a walkway of Macca – Vilacrosse Passage with a yellow transparent roof. You can reach the Old Town from the hotel also another way – walking down the Bulevardul General Gheorghe Magheru street. On the way there are also couple interesting buildings and a nearby storied supermarket with good prices – Mega Image. Just at the hotel there is a pizzeria and an italian restaurant.

Summary

Mercure Bucharest City Center is a business-tourist hotel. It’s a great solution for weekend stays – seemingly in the heart of the city and yet off the beaten track. Hotel service – on the reception as well as in the restaurant was very pleasant and upfront. It’s a pity that there’s no pool nor jacuzzi here – anyway it’s a malady of many, even new hotels. Prices in the hotel restaurant are very competitive, comparing to the other popular spots. Proximity to the public transportation lines is another, unquestionably high asset of this place.

Disadvantages:

– no pool, nor jacuzzi
